Jake Owen Making Acting Debut in Upcoming Film

Jake Owen is set to make his official acting debut in the upcoming feature film “The Friend,” currently filming in Fairhope, Alabama (where the story took place). Owen joins Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother”), Dakota Johnson (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) and Academy Award-winning actor Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). The film also stars Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”), Denee Benton (“Hamilton: An American Musical”) and Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Cherry Jones (“Boy Erased”).

Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (“Blackfish”) with a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, the film is based on writer Matthew Teague’s award-winning essay, “The Friend: Love is Not a Big Enough Word,” a true-story account first published in the May 2015 issue of Esquire about his terminally ill wife and the support of his best friend, who moves into their home following the diagnosis. The film is being produced by Scott Free Productions (“The Martian”) and Black Bear Pictures (“The Imitation Game”).

Additional details on the role and film’s release are forthcoming.
